Long before there were any people, giant reptiles called dinosaurs ruled the Earth. They lived here for more than 160 million years β far, far longer than humans have existed.
Dinosaurs came in every shape and size. Some were carnivores, meat eaters like Tyrannosaurus rex, with sharp teeth and jaws strong enough to crush bone. Others were herbivores, plant eaters like Brachiosaurus, which stretched its enormous neck to reach leaves at the very tops of the trees. The plant eaters were not helpless, though. Triceratops had three sharp horns, Stegosaurus had bony plates and a spiked tail, and Ankylosaurus swung a heavy club that could break an attacker bone.
Then, about 66 million years ago, the dinosaurs suddenly became extinct. Most scientists believe an enormous asteroid crashed into the Earth, filling the sky with dust, blocking the sunlight, and changing the weather so much that the giant animals could not survive.
So how do we know any of this? Thanks to fossils β bones, eggs, and even footprints that slowly turned to stone. Scientists called paleontologists dig them up and study them like clues in a mystery. And here is the biggest surprise of all: many scientists now believe that birds are the living relatives of dinosaurs. So perhaps the dinosaurs never fully disappeared!
