Fairy tales are some of the oldest stories in the world. For thousands of years, people passed them down from generation to generation β€” first told out loud, then written in books, and now retold in films and games. They almost always begin with "Once upon a time..." and end with "happily ever after."

Every fairy tale has familiar ingredients: a hero who is good and kind, a villain who causes trouble, some kind of magic, and a lesson called a moral. The moral of most fairy tales is simple but powerful β€” kindness is rewarded, and greed or cruelty is punished.

The most famous fairy tales were collected by the German Brothers Grimm in the early 1800s. Their collection includes Snow White, Hansel and Gretel, and over 200 others. The Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen wrote The Ugly Duckling, The Little Mermaid, and The Little Match Girl β€” stories that are often sadder and more complex than the Grimm tales.

Korea also has rich fairy tales. Heungbu and Nolbu (ν₯뢀와 놀뢀) teaches that kindness beats greed β€” the same message as Beauty and the Beast. These universal themes are why fairy tales never go out of fashion.
