High above our heads, far beyond the clouds, lies the enormous darkness of space. Our home, the Earth, is just one small part of a much bigger family of objects called the solar system.

At the center of it all is the Sun. The Sun is not a planet β€” it is a giant star, a huge ball of burning gas so bright and hot that it gives light and warmth to every planet. Eight planets travel around the Sun. The four closest ones β€” Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars β€” are made of rock. The four farthest ones β€” Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune β€” are enormous balls of gas.

What keeps the planets moving in their paths? A force called gravity. Gravity pulls every planet toward the Sun and holds it in a curved path called an orbit. The same force keeps your feet on the ground and the Moon circling the Earth.

Out of all the worlds in the solar system, Earth is the only one we know of with living things. It has air to breathe, water to drink, and just the right warmth for life. People have always dreamed of exploring the stars β€” and with rockets and telescopes, we are learning more about the universe every single year.
