Every day, people all around the world need to get from one place to another. The machines we use to travel are called vehicles, and there are hundreds of different kinds. We can sort almost all of them into three groups: vehicles that travel on land, on water, and in the air.

On land, we ride in cars, buses, and bicycles, or take a train along its tracks. On water, small boats and enormous ships carry people and cargo across rivers and oceans, while submarines can even travel deep below the surface. In the air, airplanes and helicopters fly high above the clouds, and rockets can blast all the way into space.

Transport has changed a huge amount over time. Long ago, the fastest way to travel was on the back of a horse. Then people invented the steam engine, the car, and the airplane. Today a journey that once took many months by ship can be made in less than a day by plane.

Vehicles make our lives easier, but they can also cause problems like traffic and pollution. That is why many people now use public transport such as buses and trains, ride bicycles, or build cars that run on electricity instead of fuel. How will we travel in the future?
