Google has recently pledged to take significant action against fake reviews in the UK after it was investigated by Britain’s competition regulator, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). The CMA started investigating Google in 2021 to see if it had broken the law by failing to protect British shoppers. Following the CMA’s investigation, Google has stated that it will now delete any reviews that are written by people who have repeatedly posted fake positive or negative reviews. In addition, Google will crack down on businesses that try to artificially increase their ratings by putting warnings on their profiles and not allowing users to give them new ratings or reviews.

The CEO of the CMA, Sarah Cardell, stated, “The changes we’ve secured from Google ensure robust processes are in place, so people can have confidence in reviews and make the best possible choices. They also help to create a level playing field for fair-dealing firms.” Fake reviews have long been a major issue on the internet. Research has shown that online reviews have a major influence on the way people spend their money. The CMA estimates that online reviews potentially influence about $28.7 billion of consumer spending in the UK annually.
$28.7 billion = 41 trillion won
