Jeongdong Theater to stream ‘Red Cliff’ online
Jeongdong Theater in central Seoul is to stream its signature show “Red Cliff” through YouTube on Wednesday.
The show, originally slated to run from Feb. 14 to Sunday, has been on hold to prevent the further spread of COVID-19 since Feb. 24 after the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism ordered all national theaters and art troupes to cancel their performances.
Instead, for patrons who had been eagerly awaiting the show, Jeongdong Theater will stream the show live Wednesday at 8 p.m. through its YouTube channel.
“Red Cliff,” which premiered in 2017, is based on “Jeokbyeokga” (“The Song of the Red Cliffs”), one of the five surviving stories of pansori, a traditional Korean genre of performative music. A combination of pansori and choreography, the show has evolved into a signature show format for the theater.
“It is unfortunate that we have to cancel the show, though we had prepared it for a long time,” said Kim Hee-chul, head of the theater. “For audiences who have waited for the reopening of the show, we will stream it online.”
Meanwhile, the local performing arts scene has nearly faced a complete shutdown due to the virus crisis. Though big-sized musicals had been continuing with their schedules, after two ensemble cast members of “The Phantom of the Opera” were recently confirmed with the virus infection other musical productions have been canceling their shows, too.

It is Jeongdong Theater’s best-known repertoire gaining several foreign audiences who watch the performance repeatedly during their stay. It brings together stunning pansori (epic chant) choruses, charismatic group dances, and exciting live music. It is also a gender-neutral performance, making it more interesting. This visually compelling musical shows a dynamic and exciting collaboration of contemporary dance and traditional Korean music called pansori. Incorporating pansori into its form, the musical Red Cliffs is based on the Battle of Red Cliffs described as the greatest battle of all time in one of the best-known Chinese classics, Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Set in the second century, Romance of the Three Kingdoms is also a historical novel widely beloved by people across East Asia still in the 21st century. In particular, the musical’s narrative is centered around Cao Cao begging Guan Yu to spare his life and fleeing with the remaining troops after being defeated in the Battle of Red Cliffs. Many changes have been made to the original Chinese story to make it more appropriate for Korean audiences particularly by incorporating pansori into it. What is surprising about this work is its form rather than its story. You will not help but twist your body to the beats of drums in harmony with traditional Korean musical instruments and the sounds of the choir breaking the conventions of pansori while enjoying the dynamic performances of about 20 actors going around in every corner of the stage. Above all, it is fascinating to see an extraordinary scene in which all cast members use white and red fans to signify winds, spears, fire, and a flowing river in turn. The perfectly synchronized group dance will amaze you as K-pop groups do.

The pansori musical 'Red Cliff' is based on an old historical novel, but its form is modern. The way using multi-colored lights on the pure white stage was impressive. The actors were similar but wore different clothes, and were color coded. Only white, black, and red were used for the costume colors. It was a modern and clean expression. However, the performances and scene directing using the fan dance and that filled the stage were impressive.
