Core NuanceThe passive structure 'It is said that' distances the speaker from the claim, suggesting the information comes from general opinion, tradition, or hearsay rather than personal knowledge. It carries a somewhat formal or literary tone and often appears in journalism, academic writing, and storytelling. Native speakers use it when they want to share widely accepted information without taking responsibility for its accuracy.

~이라고 한다, ~라고들 말한다, ~라고 전해진다

말하는 사람이 직접 확인한 사실이 아니라, 사람들이 일반적으로 그렇게 말하거나 믿는 내용을 전할 때 씁니다.
다소 격식 있는 표현이라 뉴스 기사, 논문, 전설이나 옛이야기 같은 글에서 자주 등장합니다.
출처를 밝히지 않고 정보를 객관적으로 전달하는 느낌을 줍니다.

주어 + is/are said to + 동사원형
특정 주어에 대한 소문이나 평판을 강조할 때 자주 쓰는 형태입니다.

He is said to be one of the greatest violinists of our time. 그는 우리 시대 최고의 바이올리니스트 중 한 명이라고 한다.

Common Mistakes이렇게 쓰면 틀려요

✕ It is said that he is a genius by many people.

✓ He is said to be a genius by many people.

'by + 사람'을 강조하고 싶을 때는 주어를 사람으로 바꾼 'be said to' 구조가 더 자연스럽습니다.

When mentioning the source with 'by,' the 'subject + is said to + verb' structure sounds more natural than the 'It is said that' structure.
✕ It is said he will resigning soon.

✓ It is said that he will resign soon.

'that' 뒤에는 완전한 문장이 와야 하므로 'will + 동사원형' 형태를 써야 합니다.

After 'that,' a complete clause is needed, so use 'will + base verb,' not '-ing.'
