In 1921, a man named Carl Ferris Miller was born in the United States. He came to Korea in 1945 as a U.S. Navy officer. He loved Korea so much that he decided to stay. Later, he became a Korean citizen and chose the name Min Byung-gal.  
In 1962, he bought land in Taean, a town near the sea. At first, he just wanted a quiet place to live. But he soon fell in love with Korean nature. He began planting many trees and flowers. In 1970, he started Chollipo Arboretum, the first private tree garden in Korea. Carl worked very hard. He collected over 17,000 types of plants from all over the world. He also wrote careful notes about each one. He shared ideas with scientists and gardens in other countries.  
Carl died in 2002, but his dream lives on. In 2024, his notes became a national cultural treasure. Many people visit Chollipo Arboretum today to enjoy nature and remember the man who loved trees.
