Hello there! I am writing a letter from a magical city floating on the sea. Do you know where? I am of course referring to Venice, Italy.  
As a ‘city of water’, Venice has a slightly different transportation system from other places. Buses, taxis, private cars, tourist taxis and trucks operating in Venice are ALL BOATS, not cars!  
The most famous of which is the gondola, a boat originally used for burials. The city has very little land, so when a person died, the body had to be moved to a neighboring island where it would be buried in a cemetery. A grim visual compared to the romantic image gondolas hold today.  
As time went on, gondolas began to be used for other means in Venice, different from their original purpose. People began to use them as a form of public transport as well as for delivering vegetables and groceries. Their reputation also increased tourism attracting foreigners to enjoy a slow ride through the waters of Venice.  
Unfortunately, Venice is slowly sinking into the Adriatic Sea. This is because the sea level is rising due to global warming. At this speed, by the time you are a grandparent, most of the city may be submerged under water, and you might have to go scuba diving to see the Venetian vestiges! In order to preserve such precious locations, we must be more conscious of the environment.
