A new survey by the Bank of Korea shows that only 15.9% of in-person payments in Korea were made with cash last year. Most people used credit cards (46.2%) or debit cards (16.4%). Mobile card payments—made using smartphones—were also popular, making up 12.9% of payments. People said they were most satisfied with credit cards, rating them 75.5 out of 100. Debit cards followed with 72.9, and cash scored 64.4. Credit cards were seen as very convenient, but some said they were more expensive to use.  
Older adults still use cash more often. People in their 60s and older used cash for 30.2% of purchases. In contrast, people in their 20s used cash for just 3.6%. They also carried the least cash—about 27,000 won. Cash was used the most in traditional markets (56.3%), but rarely at gas stations or department stores. Compared to Korea, countries like Japan and Germany still use cash more, while places like Norway and Sweden use it much less.
