A South Korean man has been convicted for deliberately overeating to avoid mandatory military service. The man, whose identity remains undisclosed, was sentenced to one year in prison, suspended for two years, under the Military Service Act. This law allows penalties of up to three years for evading military duty without valid reasons.
South Korea requires nearly all able-bodied men aged 18 to 35 to complete at least 18 months of military service. This policy has been in place since the 1950s.
