A South Korean man has been convicted for deliberately overeating to avoid mandatory military service. The man, whose identity remains undisclosed, was sentenced to one year in prison, suspended for two years, under the Military Service Act. This law allows penalties of up to three years for evading military duty without valid reasons.
South Korea requires nearly all able-bodied men aged 18 to 35 to complete at least 18 months of military service. This policy has been in place since the 1950s. Initially, in 2017, the man was assessed at Level 2 during his military physical exam, qualifying him for combat roles. However, before a subsequent physical exam last year, he doubled his food intake and drank excessive amounts of water. This led to significant weight gain, raising his BMI to the point of obesity and earning him a Level 4 classification. This status exempted him from combat roles and allowed him to work in a government agency while living at home.
The man admitted his wrongdoing and pledged to fulfill his military service. A friend who reportedly suggested the overeating idea received a lighter sentence, as neither had prior convictions.
