Core Nuance'If I were' uses the past form 'were' even with 'I' because it talks about something not real — just imagined. Native speakers often use it to give soft advice ('If I were you...') or to picture a situation that isn't true right now.

가정법에서는 'was'보다 'were'를 쓰고, 뒤 문장에는 'will'이 아닌 'would'를 씁니다.
In this unreal 'if' sentence, use 'were' (not 'was') and 'would' (not 'will') in the second part.
✕ If I were you, I will study harder.
✓ If I were you, I would study harder.
'If I were ~' 뒤에는 미래형 'will'이 아니라 조건법 'would'가 옵니다.
After 'If I were ~', use 'would' instead of 'will' because the situation is imagined, not real.
