A conversational phrase used to introduce a problem, complication, or important point that qualifies or complicates what was just said.

문제가 뭐냐면~

PART 1 INPUT기본 개념과 핵심 패턴

Definition & Nuance의미와 쓰임새

A conversational phrase used to introduce a problem, complication, or important point that qualifies or complicates what was just said.

Core NuanceThe speaker is signaling, 'here's what actually matters' or 'here's the catch.' It often introduces bad news, an obstacle, or a hidden reason behind a situation, and it softens the delivery by framing the issue as a simple fact rather than a complaint. Native speakers use it constantly in everyday conversation to pivot toward the real issue.

Common Patterns & Structures자주 쓰이는 패턴&구조

  1. The thing is, + 완전한 문장

쉼표 뒤에 문제나 진짜 이유를 담은 완전한 문장을 붙입니다.

I'd love to join you, but the thing is, I'm completely broke this month. 같이 가고 싶은데, 문제는 내가 이번 달에 완전 빈털터리라는 거야.

  2. The thing is that + 완전한 문장

조금 더 격식 있거나 글에서 쓰는 형태로, 'that'을 넣어 사실을 명확히 밝힙니다.

The thing is that we simply don't have enough time to finish the project by Friday. 사실은 우리가 금요일까지 프로젝트를 끝낼 시간이 도저히 없다는 거야.

Common Mistakes이렇게 쓰면 틀려요

  • ✕ The thing is I busy today.

✓ The thing is, I'm busy today.

'The thing is' 뒤에는 반드시 be동사나 조동사를 갖춘 완전한 문장이 와야 합니다.

'The thing is' must be followed by a complete clause with a verb, not a fragment.

  • ✕ The thing is about my job is stressful.

✓ The thing is, my job is stressful.

'The thing is' 자체에 '문제는'이라는 뜻이 담겨 있어 뒤에 'about'을 붙일 필요가 없습니다.

Don't add 'about' after 'the thing is'; the phrase itself already introduces the point.
