Professor Stuart Russell, one of the world’s leading experts on AI, has recently said that advancements in AI technology could spell the end of traditional classrooms in the near future. He predicted that AI could help students all over the world and would allow students to be personally tutored anytime, anywhere by using ChatGPT-style chatbots on their smartphones. “It ought to be possible within a few years, maybe by the end of this decade, to be delivering a pretty high quality of education to every child in the world. That’s potentially transformative,” Russell said at the UN’s AI for Good Global Summit.

Russell warned that incorporating AI technology into classrooms could cause many teachers to lose their jobs[. He also stated that AI technology needs to be properly risk-assessed before being used to teach young children. “Hopefully the system, if properly designed, won’t tell a child how to make a bioweapon. I think that’s manageable,” said Russell. South Korea’s education minister Lee Ju-ho announced last month that he wants all public school classrooms to adopt AI technology. He hopes that this will make South Korea’s highly-competitive education system more fair for all students. However, this proposed plan is yet to be finalized.
