Scientists from the Babraham Institute have announced that they have successfully de-aged human skin cells by 30 years. This breakthrough could help develop new treatments for heart disease and neurological disorders. According to the researchers, they were able to de-age the cells by using chemicals to ‘reprogram’ them to remove age-related damage and changes. Prof Wolf Reik, the head of the team, said ‘The long-term aim is to extend the human health span, rather than the lifespan, so that people can get older in a healthier way.’
This technique originates from animal cloning tests conducted by the Roslin Institute in the early 1990s which eventually led to the creation of the first cloned animal, Dolly the sheep. The team at the Roslin Institute originally never intended to clone animals, instead, they hoped to find out how to create human stem cells. Stem cells are a special type of cell that can develop into almost any type of cell in the human body. The scientists at the Babraham Institue used a method called IPS which is a simplified version of the technique used to create Dolly the sheep.
