Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has removed multiple networks of accounts that spread misinformation mainly about U.S politics and the war in Ukraine. One network was from Russia and spread misinformation about the war in Ukraine using an extensive network of accounts and websites that impersonated real news websites such as The Guardian and Der Spiegel. This network primarily targeted Germany but also spread misinformation in other European nations such as France, the U.K and Italy. Meta stated that this network spent more than $100,000 on ads.
Meta also removed a network of 80 accounts that were from China. This network mainly targeted Americans and spread misinformation about U.S politics using fake accounts to post and share memes that attacked both sides of the political spectrum. Another small network of Chinese accounts that targeted people in the Czech Republic was also removed. ‘These accounts largely stuck to a shift pattern that coincided with a nine-to-five, Monday-to-Friday work schedule during working hours in China – 12 hours ahead of Florida and six hours ahead of Prague’ said Meta in a report. Meta also sent information about the Chinese networks to the FBI.
