Walking improves health, and research shows that any amount of steps is beneficial—but more is better, up to a point. For those under 60, the ideal range is 8,000 to 10,000 steps per day, while people over 60 benefit most from 6,000 to 8,000 steps. Even if you’re physically active, long periods of sedentary behavior, like sitting at a desk, can still be harmful. Simple movement breaks—like walking in place or taking the stairs—help offset these effects. Walking may take longer than a gym workout, but it's just as powerful for your health—with zero side effects.
