Workers in South Korea will soon get an extra day off if either Christmas Day or Buddha’s Birthday falls on a Saturday or Sunday. Because Buddha’s Birthday will be on Saturday, May 27th this year, Korean workers will be able to enjoy an extra day off. Personnel Management Minister Kim Seung-ho said this change is meant to ‘ensure the right to sufficient rest for workers, prop up consumption and improve the domestic economy.’ Parliamentary approval is not needed for this new rule to come into effect; however, it still needs to be approved by the Ministry of Government Legislation, President Yook Suk Yeol's office, and the Cabinet.

In the past, the People Power Party (PPP) had opposed giving workers an extra day off if these holidays fell on the weekend . However, PPP floor leader Joo Ho-young recently stated, ‘It is about time that the government reviews expanding the designation of substitute holidays, considering domestic demand, people's right to rest and the requests from religious bodies’. In 2021 and 2013, the South Korean government passed laws that gave workers an extra day off if holidays such as Hangeul Day, Children's Day, or National Liberation Day fell on the weekend.
